PIN Abney Park Cemetery
A touching place with a lot of history
Abney Park is a fascinating place in Stoke Newington, visitors can walk through beautiful trees that carefully frame the resting graves. This place is both mysterious and wild - an oasis of peace with plenty of biodiversity and history- all within London`s boundaries. Abney Park cemetery is one of the ‘magnificent seven’ cemeteries of London as well as a woodland memorial park and local nature reserve. There is free public access to the park, so everyone can enjoy this excellent and wonderfully peaceful last resting place.
History
In the early 1800s, London’s rapid and growing population needed to have new and huge cemeteries because of the saturation of the local burial area , Parliament passed a bill in 1832 to encourage the establishment of new private cemeteries. Within ten years, seven had been established (later dubbed 'The Magnificent Seven), one of which was Abney Park.
